Car Batteries & Winter – Tips on how to keep your battery running strong
August 26, 2025
Did you know it’s more common to experience a flat battery in the cooler months than at any other time of the year?
Car batteries need regular warmth and energy to stay in good working order – even when your car isn’t in use
Here are our top tips from the M&R team to help keep your car battery functioning at its best:
-
Take it for a decent drive once a week – Aim for longer trips rather than short runs. Short drives often aren’t enough to replace the energy used to start the vehicle, which can slowly drain the battery.
-
Check your battery’s condition – Ideally, this should be done before winter begins, but it’s never too late. Look for cracks, broken pieces, leaks, corrosion, bulging, or any signs of damage.
-
Park in a sheltered spot – If you can, park in a garage, covered area, or underground space. If that’s not possible, aim to position the front of your car out of the direct wind.
-
Monitor and charge regularly – Keep an eye on your battery and top it up when needed. A fully charged battery is less likely to freeze, so make sure your car is getting regular use in winter.
-
Reduce unnecessary strain – Lights, radio, and heating can all drain your battery. Turn them off before switching off the ignition. On cold mornings, let the alternator charge for a moment before driving away.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to regularly check your battery or get it professionally tested to avoid any unwelcome surprises.
